Peter Engels (° 1956) is, together with Marc A. Huybrechts, the co-founder of the law office Huybrechts & Engels (1981) which became Huybrechts, Engels, Craen & Partners elegis law firm in 2006.
 
In 1978, he graduated as Master of Law at the University of Antwerp (UAntwerp) and was admitted to the Antwerp Bar in 1981. He was Academic Assistant Insurance Law at the University of Antwerp (1979-1983). As a practising lawyer, he continued his education in 1988 at the University of Southampton (Short Course on Maritime Law) and qualified in 2001 at the High Council of Justice obtaining the certificate to become a professional magistrate. He was appointed substitute Justice of the Peace of the Kapellen-Antwerp district in 2000.
 
With almost four decades of experience both as a litigator and business lawyer, Peter Engels is a senior partner at elegis law firm serving the national and international business community. His wide-ranging core area of practice includes both national and international criminal law and criminal procedure, company law (M&A, contract law, insolvency law, distribution and franchising), banking and finance law, real estate and construction law, environmental law, civil law (liability, pecuniary rights, international family law and inheritance law), as well as commercial and maritime law.
 
He is a member of the Antwerp and Swiss Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of Terralex (a worldwide network of law firms) and of IAPL (International Association of Practising Lawyers). He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the ECBA (European Criminal Bar Association) and of VOCAL (Victims of Crime Association of Lawyers).
 
Peter Engels actively participates in public social life and is a member of various associations such as the Fifty-One Club International Antwerp-Harbour (Past-president and secretary), Cercle Royal Concorde-Philotaxe, the American Belgian Association (A.B.A.), and he is a board member of RCFC Cappellen football club in 3rd Division.
 
He contributed to various legal publications, seminars and conferences.
